Jonathan has long advocated for the rights of children and spoken out against routine infant circumcision and genital mutilation, including at the 13th International Symposium on Genital Autonomy and Children's Rights, and at the 2017 Australian Humanist Convention.
Science and health policy
Jonathan is public policy and advocacy professional working to advance the health and human rights of under-served and diverse communities. An experienced science and medical writer, Jonathan has authored more than a hundred medical fact sheets and coauthored market-leading biology textbooks. He has also authored academic papers in the field of comparative immunology, and has a special interest in reptile immunity.
Jonathan was coached by Olympian and fencing Master, Cornel Vena, from 2002 to 2010. He was the founding Head Coach of the North Queensland Fencing Academy in early 2010 and resigned to move to Melbourne in 2013. He currently coaches at the VRI Fencing Club in Richmond, training under Olympian Gerry Adams. Jonathan's fencers have achieved podium finishes at novice, state and national competitions.
Jonathan holds a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science with Honours from James Cook University and a Bachelor of Arts with majors in philosophy and politics from Macquarie University.
